- Research the breeds your are interested in.
- Attend dog shows and ask the dog owners about the dogs.
- Do you have time to take care of your dog. What is your schedule like? Do you work all day and have little time to spend at home with your pet? Many breeds require a lot of attention and care, such as regular brushing, ear cleaning, and nail trimming
- Dog you have kids at home. Some breeds may not be suitable with kids.

- Is there a function that your a dog for? For instance, some dogs make better watch dogs than others.
2) How to find the right or responsible breeder:
- Visit the breeder's in person. You can tell immediately whether they are responsible breeders by looking at their facility. If their place is very unsanitary like their dogs are kept in cages filled with dog waste, leave immediately.
- Breeder should contractually guarantee the health of their dogs for genetic illnesses.
- Research the common genetic defects of your breed of choice, and ask about the health of the dam and sire (mother and father). Research the pedigree three generations deep. The best breeders readily offer this information, and will have written proof when possible. For example, the Orthopedic Foundation of America (OFA) offers a written analysis of dogs' hip X-rays for breeds subject to hip dysplasia. Puppies are too young to be X-rayed, but the dam and the sire should be OFA-certified.
- Avoid breeders who try to sell you puppies under six weeks old. Important behavioral traits are developed between 4 and 8 weeks of age. It's best to wait to prevent any unwanted personality problems.
- Ask the seller if you can see the puppies's parents. Most of the puppies' behavior and physical traits will come from the parents.
- Research the breeds first and ask the breeder questions to make sure they are knowledgeable about the breed. Responsible breeders should know alot about the breed the sale.
- Speak to and visit more than just one breeder.
3) Questions to ask the breeder:
- Ask about the puppies' parents and grandparents.
- What were their parents' and grandparents' temperments like?
- Ask about health problems and if they have certification for showing that their parents were clear of cognitial illnesses. (i.e. Hip displaysia, Eye problems, Thyroid problems, Bleeding disorders, or others specific to your breed of choice)
- Avoid breeders who try to sell you puppies under six weeks old. Important behavioral traits are developed between 4 and 8 weeks of age. It's best to wait to prevent any unwanted personality problems.
- Ask if past litters had problems health wise and behavioral wise.
- Ask for health record of the puppy. What shoots have they gotten and still need.
- What type of food are they eating. It is important to keep the food the same as what the breeder have been feeding the puppy to keep the dog from getting sick. It takes time for the dog to adjust to different food brand.
- What type of temperment the dog is displaying right now.
- What type of health guarantee the breeder gives.
4) Questions responsible breeders should ask you:
- Why do you want this dog?
- Have you research the dog and what do you know about the breed?
- Have you ever owned a dog? Was it the same breed?
- Do you have other pets?
- What are your schedule like? Will you or a responsible adult be at home to take care of the dog?
- Do you have children? If so, what age are they?
- Will this dog be spayed or neutered? Or do you intend to breed this dog?
Remember, when you are buying a dog, you are committing a long part of your life to take care of them. A typical dog's life span will last from 8 to 18 years. We hope you will find the right dog for you and enjoy every minute with them. They are truly man's best friend.
God Bless,
